Blogger of the Month – June

I truly believe one of the most important parts of blogging is supporting other bloggers.

With that in mind, I’ve started a monthly series where I will feature a different mental health blogger each time so you can all get to know some of my favourite people to follow!

This month is all about Bethanne from My Name Is Bethanne.

Introduce yourself and your blog!
My name is Bethanne which funnily enough is also the name of my blog – www.mynameisbethanne.com. I’m 35 years old and am originally from the midlands in the UK. I’m a self employed photographer and have been for the past 7 years. I initially wanted to work for myself after my son Charlie was born in 2010. This became even more paramount when he was diagnosed with autism aged 4.

Why did you start your blog?
I started my blog just over a year ago. I think to begin with I just wanted a place to combine my two loves – photography and writing. The blog actually started out just being focused on travel but as I was going through an eating disorder recovery program I found that writing about my journey was cathartic and also people seemed to really respond to those posts, Now my blog is a fusion of travel, mental health, eco friendly and autism parenting content. It’s a bit all over the place but I quite like that.

How would you describe your blogging style?
My blogging style is pretty laid back. Someone once told me that the best way to write is as if you are actually speaking to someone. This really stuck with me and I always want my words to sound conversational and to be relatable. I want it to sound like I’m talking directly to you, because I am. I also never schedule posts, I’m rubbish lol. I just write whenever I want to and usually have about six posts on the go all at one time.

What is your favourite post that you’ve ever written and why?
My favourite post so far is the one about body neutrality. For me, this was such an important piece to write and to put out there. I was so pleased that it got such a good reception because I was a little nervous talking so honestly about  my own personal issues with my body.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve got to share about blogging?
When it comes to blogging, I still consider myself to be somewhat of an amateur but my best advice is to just write about what YOU want, what you know and what you feel. It’s great to have lots of subscribers and comments etc but the numbers aren’t really what’s important. Blogging should be for you. It’s your little creative space.

What is your favourite thing about yourself?
My favourite thing about myself is my ability to get excited about pretty much everything. Perhaps it’s the photographer in me, but I feel like I see everything with brand new eyes, for the first time and I just van’t help but be enthusiastic about all the beauty that’s before me, big or small.

What is your favourite self care activity?
I’d love to say that spa days are my favourite self care activity but to be honest they are few and far between. Not that long ago I had a real issue with sitting in cafes or restaurants on my own. I was terrified that people would think I was weird or that they’d see me eating and think I was greedy. Now I make it a priority to treat myself once a week to some alone time with coffee and cake. Often I write or read whilst there and it’s hard to believe that this has become therapeutic for me, but it really has.

What is your biggest achievement?
My greatest achievement, without a doubt is my son Charlie. When he was two and a half years old a medical professional told me that he may never speak, may never be toilet trained and quite possibly wouldn’t ever know me as his mother. 6 years later and my happy, beautiful little boy goes go the toilet, plays with his toys, calls for his mama, he throws his arm around me and kisses me a hundred times a day. He’s my little miracle. A force of nature and I am so, so proud of him.

What photograph is guaranteed to make you smile?
Any photos of pandas and I’m literally grinning from ear to ear. But seriously, one of my favourite photos is one of myself and a couple of friends as we climbed Mount Snowdon for the second time in two days. It was foggy and freezing but for me it became a symbol of how anything is possible if you just keep going.

Who are your top three bloggers right now and why?
All About Rosalilla – Nicola and I became pals on Instagram initially but I love keeping up with her blog. Like myself, she’s had to go through some real serious stuff and the fact that she now travels and writes so beautifully about it, it just inspires me and so many others to continue on in the face of adversity.
Rocking the Spectrum – I love everything that Linda writes so much and I find it fascinating to experience how she sees the world as an adult with autism. Every single post is eloquent and thought provoking – definitely worth a look.
One More Light LB – Lisa was one of the very first bloggers I connected with on Twitter and she has become a go-to read for me. Her blog is a wonderful place for mental health advocacy. Not only is she a fantastic writer but she’s a wonderful person to. I always look forward to new content from her.

If you could write a blog post about anything you wanted, what would it be?
If I could write a blog post on absolutely anything I think it would probably be about how to travel full time in van around Europe – keep your eyes peeled……

What question would you like to ask next month’s blogger?
If you had to give just one piece of advice to a new blogger what would it be, and why?

Thanks so much Bethanne! You can also find her over on Twitter and Instagram – I would highly recommend giving her a follow!

Stay tuned for July’s blogger of the month!
