I truly believe one of the most important parts of blogging is supporting other bloggers.
With that in mind, I’ve started a monthly series where I will feature a different mental health blogger each time so you can all get to know some of my favourite people to follow!
This month is all about Nicole from Nicole’s Journey.
Introduce yourself and your blog!
Hello, I’m Nicole and my blog is Nicole’s journey, I write and share about a variety of things, I guess it is kind of a journal of my journey with health and well-being, through eating disorder recovery, living with anxiety and wherever I am with my physical health and illnesses. Amongst my health rambles, it is a place for me to share my adventures in nature, gluten-free and vegan finds, creations and days with me, see, I told you there were a variety of wonders, thoughts, topics and things.
Why did you start your blog?
I first started blogging way back in 2011, when I was studying fashion promotion and styling, of course my blog then was very different! When I became unwell, I had to leave university and my sister suggested I made a different blog, as a distraction and way to communicate the thoughts and feelings I had without the difficulties of talking so I started blogging as a way to share my journey through recovery. Since then, I have a had a couple of different blogs. I started Nicole’s Journey after finding myself in a much better place with my recovery, I soon realised I enjoyed writing about other parts of my life, and all that recovery was giving me.
How would you describe your blogging style?
Oh my goodness, I have never really thought about it, I guess, it is very much like a journal-style. I like to keep my posts simple, I have Dyslexia and so, I find certain things difficult to read, I am very aware that when I write, I write in ways that I find fuss-free and that are easier to read, I also love to include as many photographs as I can.
What is your favourite post that you’ve ever written and why?
Can I share a couple? There are just so many that I love!
Summer camp, where to begin? This one because, well, I think my time at summer camp was just one of the best things I have ever done. This post means a lot to me as, working a summer in America, had been on my to do list for as long as I can remember and with ill health, I never thought I would be able to do it, that and it was just such a truly incredible summer.
My dad talking about mental health. Of course this one is because well, my dad is pretty incredible, but again with ill health, I never thought I would be in a position where my dad could talk so openly to me, so the fact that we are now in a position where we can talk openly about our mental health to each other as well as online, really means a lot.
Taking each day as it comes. I chose this one because this is reflects where I currently am with my mental health, but within it shows acceptance, an awareness that means a great deal to me and also, the present moment, through struggles of trauma and pain, the present moment and life as it currently is, reminds me that although some days might be darker than others, I can get through it by taking each day as it comes.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve got to share about blogging?
Hmm.. I think make sure you enjoy it, do it for yourself first, and anyone else who benefits from it, is a bonus. If you don’t want to share something, don’t. Your blog is your own and above all should be a place for you to be you. Of course, there are all kinds of blogs and reasons for blogging so it can be difficult to remind yourself of doing it for yourself, try to make a conscious effort to check in with yourself and why you are blogging.
What is your favourite thing about yourself?
I love how open minded I am, although sometimes it makes making decisions difficult, it also means I get to try a whole lot of new things and allows me to be understanding, open and easy to talk to.
What is your favourite self care activity?
Either being outside walking or being creative with my camera, whether I am visiting somewhere new or simply taking photographs of my dog, both fill me with the present moment, joy and seem to remind me of all the things I like about myself and the world around me.
What is your biggest achievement?
Oh gosh, as someone who has learnt to celebrate the small achievements, everything can seem like a big achievement, of course my recovery from Anorexia, but also facing anxieties and managing physical illness the way I do are huge achievements. Also, leaving university to focus on my recovery, asking for greater help and support despite Anorexia, putting my trust in those around me, studying floristry, learning to drive, going back to university, graduating, working at a summer camp, sharing my experiences with mental illness and I should probably leave it there.
What photograph is guaranteed to make you smile?
I have so many photographs that make me smile so this was most difficult to answer but of course I chose one of my two adorable dogs, who could not smile at this photograph? We had only had Archie (the puppy) a few days when I took this photograph and Syd, who is no longer here (cries), just loved him so much, my heart.
Who are your top three bloggers right now and why?
You obviously, and I am not just saying it.. your blog provides so much understanding and awareness in a way that is most valued, you are a light to many, and I hope you know just how incredible you are.
Sophie from Bumble and Be.Sophie is a true ray of sunshine and her blog provides the most magical and whimsical of tales. Sophie’s writing style, blog design, photography and creations never fail to brighten my day.
Sofi from Forever Fi. Fi is one of the kindest, most positive of all souls and it honestly shines through Forever Fi and social media channels too. I adore the Fi and Friends hashtag and blog category along with all of Fi’s creative and inspiring posts. I have found so many other supportive and kind souls because of Fi, Fi is such an example of how positivity and kindness can be shared.
I could share so many, but right now, Yours, Sophie’s and Sofia’s blogs are my top go-to blogs when I need a little lift or inspiration, and I could not be more grateful for that.
What was your silver lining this month?
I wrote this in advance so here is to wishful thinking but by May, my sliver lining should be completion of the most part of uni work.. (I really really hope so).
What question would you like to ask next months blogger?
‘If you could write a blog post about anything you wanted, what would it be?’
Stay tuned for June’s blogger of the month!
