Mystery Blogger Award (And More!)

So since I got back from holiday in February, I have been nominated by five different bloggers for award tags!

I’m honestly so, so grateful; and as I’ve said before I’m still amazed that anybody is reading this at all, let alone enjoying it! So thank you so much to Steff’s Journey for my Leibster nomination, Megan Blog’s About and Peter Shaw for my Sunshine nominations and to Lulu and Hannah’s Life Diaries for my Mystery Blogger nominations.

I had so many great questions, so rather than do lots of separate posts I’m going to squish them all together. So if you don’t want to know lots of useless facts about me – look away now.

My Questions

If everything was legal for one day, what would you do and why?
Rob a bank. I work so hard and always feel like I don’t have much money, and all I want to do in my heart is travel the world. Money would give me the opportunity to do that.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I actually won a National writing competition when I was 6 in which we had to write a letter saying what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I picked the sun so I could watch the fish in the sea and be friends with the moon! Obviously once I realised that was impossible I changed my mind. I used to horse ride competitively and I always envisioned that I would have a career in the equine industry, but I became really allergic to horses as a teenager. I’m still heartbroken about it, I miss being around horses so much. After school I studied fashion and textile design for 3 years. Then I toyed between counselling, psychology, teaching or journalism. Then I ended up as a nurse!

What are 5 staple pieces of clothing you have in your wardrobe?
Skinny jeans, black slogan jumper, slogan t shirt, LBD and a bobble hat.

Describe yourself in 5 words… make it interesting if you can!
Colourful, creative, extroverted, ambitious, sensitive.

Cake or chocolate? Only one!
Chocolate, always.

Will you still be blogging in a years time?
I hope so!

Which 3 places in the world would you travel to if you could?
Iceland, Maldives, Australia.

Do you have any nicknames?
Cara cat friend, commando Cara (don’t ask), Cars.

City or country?
I love both for different reasons!

What’s your favourite quote?
‘Nevertheless, she persisted.’

What do you do to wind down after a stressful day?
Have a bath and a glass of wine and watch RuPauls Drag Race.

What’s the best thing about blogging?
Meeting so many wonderful people and getting to discover so many great blogs. Also helping to raise awareness around mental health and people writing to me saying that they feel less alone. That makes my day.

Where do you want to be in a years time with your blog?
I hope to be reaching a wider audience and helping more people to feel better about their mental health.

If you could click your fingers and arrive at anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
The Philippines, my favourite place in the world.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
My friend Lizi, who took her life in 2009. She was an all round incredible human and I miss her a lot.

If you had to pick the last meal you were ever going to eat, what would it be?
Pizza! With loads of pineapple – don’t @ me.

Where’s the best place you’ve ever been to?
The Philippines! I loved it so much and would go back 1000 times over.

What’s one thing you’d say to your younger self?
Hang in there – things will get better. Don’t waste all this time hating yourself.

What’s your favourite series to binge watch?
RuPauls Drag Race.

What’s your favourite feel-good song?
I don’t know if I have just one, but usually if I need a boost to get going, especially at the gym, I chuck some Arctic Monkeys on.

What’s your proudest achievement?
I won a National nursing award in 2016 which is how I got my scholarship to travel to the Philippines.

What made you start blogging?
I wanted to connect to lots of people and help people to feel less alone in their mental health.

What’s your favourite food?
Probably chocolate or cheese.

What 5 things would you take with you to a desert island?
My cat, my Kindle, my phone, my stuffed pig and my glasses. Does the island have WiFi? If not I substitute Kindle and phone for notepad and pencil!

Apart from blogging, what’s your favourite pastime?
Anything creative: drawing, cross stitch, painting, dancing.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?
I would like to be less of a perfectionist. I put so much pressure on myself and if I don’t get something exactly right or I’m not the best at whatever I’m trying to do I really struggle with it. It’s a very stressful way to live!

Whats your one must have item as a blogger?
My phone! I’m always jotting down ideas, drafting posts and taking photos. I also pretty much exclusively publish posts on my phone though I do occasionally use my laptop.

If you could use a colour theme for your blog, which would you choose?
I like it a lot at the moment with the black, pink and yellow. I plan to eventually go self hosted this year though so I have a bit more creative control over the layout.

What do you find most difficult when blogging?
I’m really bad at self promotion because I worry that people will get fed up of seeing my posts, but people swear by it! So I’m trying to get better at that.

What made you write your first blog post? Link to post.
To start with I thought I might focus a lot more on my journey as a nurse, but actually I settled into it really quickly and overall there’s not a huge amount to say. I also wanted an outlet to be able to help raise awareness of mental health problems and to maybe help others to feel less alone. You can find my first post here.

If you could remain yourself and be in a fictional universe, which would it be?

If you could, on the other hand, become a fictional character in any given fictional universe, which would you be?
Probably still Wonderland! But I’d love to be the Cheshire Cat.

When you read books, do you have preferences ? (eg classics, modern, crime, romance, fantasy, scifi, an author? short or long ? text or must have illustration, etc)?
Generally I tend to read thriller/murder mystery type books. Occassionally I read mental health books but I sometimes find that as I am a mental health nurse, my boyfriend is a mental health nurse, I write about mental health and also live with mental illness, that my life is a bit saturated with it! My most favourite author is Matt Haig, followed by Lewis Carroll. I like the odd autobiography; Wild is an amazing book.

When you read books, watch movies and shows, do you like to find their messages (philosophical, sociopolitical, symbolism, etc)?
Not really! I just like to enjoy them and not take things too seriously.

Is quality of adaptation from one form to another important for you (novel/s to show/movie, or other way around) or do you see each piece as its own universe?
I think it is important; if it’s not true to the story it might as well be called something else!

Do you think mental health is treated the same as physical health and if not, why not?
No it isn’t, and I think that is because there is still such a stigma around it. Tackling that stigma is why I started this blog in the first place.

In a dream world, what would you change about mental health services in the UK?
More funding! Essentially that is the root of all the difficulties.

What advice would you give to someone worried about their mental health?
Talk to people. Friends, family, professionals; it doesn’t matter. Just talk to someone – you are not alone.

What was your favourite lesson in school?
Art. I had the coolest teacher, Mr Robertson. I was kind of a weirdo in school but he always made me feel a bit more normal by playing music we both liked in lessons and chatting to me a lot. Plus I’ve always loved being creative and went on to study art for three years at college.

Do you believe in fate?
Sometimes! It varies depending on what is happening in my life. I try to.

What is your favourite feel good film?
Any Disney film but especially Alice in Wonderland, Tangled, Pocahontas and The Aristocats. Also Mean Girls.

What is your favourite self-care activity?
Probably painting my nails!

My best post:

The post that has had the biggest impact in terms of views and engagement is this one about World Bipolar Day. Although I’m really glad it made such an impact, I’m most proud of the posts in my series about how different mental health problems feel. It’s raw and honest and was hard to write but I really feel like it’s helped some people and that’s what this whole blog is about.

So, that’s all my questions. If you made it this far, congratulations! You now know a lot about me! As I’ve been nominated for Liebster and Sunshine Awards before, I’m passing on the Mystery Blogger Award today.
